This single, Mono Puff's first, was released shortly after the album, also
on the Rykodisc label. It contains four tracks, and runs just under 15 minutes.
One of the tracks, "The Devil Went Down To Newport (Totally Remade)" is a re-mix
of the title track "The Devil Went Down To Newport (Totally Rocking)". The
remix is a slower, spacier version of the song, but still equally enjoyable.
"Oddball" is a cover of a Frank Black song, who is a good friend of John
Flansburgh, and "Tryptophane" orginally appeared on the Mono Puff demo disc, and
was not re-recorded for the single. However, on the demo disc, the song was
spelled "Tryptophan", like the amino acid, without the 'e' on the end. Inside the case,
along with the CD and insert, one would find a red and orange Mono Puff sticker, not unlike the one pictured
here. Normal people had fun and stuck the sticker wherever they thought best.
But crazy completists like myself put it away forever, never letting it see the light of day. Mono Puff also released a 2 song vinyl 7" on the Slow River label which features "The Devil Went Down To Newport", as well as a song called "Pretty Fly" - a song by John Flansburgh's wife Robin Goldwasser, A.K.A Sister Puff. The cover of the record is green with the words "Mono Puff" and other text hand-written on the front. On the back is a hand-drawn picure of a building and the words "Manhattan Psychiatric Center". The squiggly things drawn underneath the building are labelled as "Mind-Reading Antennas"
